Highlands County Education Association (HCEA) is the association that represents the 687 people who fall under the “teacher” umbrella (teachers, guidance counselors, ESE support faciliators, content specialists, and more). We are growing our membership and community outreach, one person at a time. We are the largest association in the Peace River Basin Service Unit.
Nick Mrozowski -President
Nick Mrozowski is a physical education teacher at Sun N Lake Elementary. He has worked in public education for 5 years. In that time, he has advocated for better funding and better conditions for our students and staff by running for Florida House of Representatives in 2018, lobbying on behalf of teachers in Tallahassee, and serving in multiple roles within the union. He currently sits on the insurance board, negotiations, and several other committees.
Tim Murphy - 1st Vice President
Tim Murphy is our 1st VP and is a history teacher at Sebring High School. He has worked in our schools for 20+ years and is also a US Navy Veteran. He is in charge of the HCEA scholarship, PD, and acts in proxy, for the president when he is not able to attend to an issue or task. Tim also sits on the insurance board, IPARC, and negotiations.
Karen Jowers- 2nd Vice President
I have been teaching for 28 years.
I moved to my hometown of Lake Placid in 2015 and began teaching pre-k ese at LPE. I moved this year to Cracker Trail Elementary - also teaching pre-k ese.
As 2nd VP, I am responsible for membership recruitment/retainment.

Kimberly Henry - Treasurer
Treasurer Kimberly Henry is a teacher at Avon Elementary. She is the keeper of the books and purse. She focuses on fiscal responsibility, and creating data used by HCEA in membership drives, PD offerings, etc..
April Clark - Secretary.
The board works together on all functions and tasks of HCEA and encourage you to reach out to any of them.
